I first met Harriet on a blustery November Sunday my freshman year of college. Terry and I were heading back to school after Thanksgiving break and stopped off to have lunch with the family at the Redding house.

Harriet was cheerfully presiding over a steamy kitchen filled with tantalizing aromas. Overflowing platters of baked ham, yams and peas were carried into the dining room and 8 of us took our seats. Within moments the platters were bare. I marveled at the ease with which Harriet handled a crowd of hungry people. I knew then that she was a wonderful cook who took great pleasure in nurturing those under her care.

Seven years later, Harriet became my mother-in-law.

In the intervening 49 years, I have discovered many things. First and foremost, Harriet was a devoted and loving mother. She defended her kids - and later her grandkids - with the ferocity of a very pissed-off Kaboodle. She was also the grandmother I always wished I had: comforting fussy babies, fixing boo boos, baking cookies with the grandkids and exposing them to music, art and culture. On one occasion, after a very trying day with my premature infant, I drove to the house in Danbury, rang the bell and, when Harriet answered, I deposited a screaming Emily into her arms and left. When I returned 2 hours later, Harriet answered the door, asked quietly if I was alright, and handed a serene Emily back to me.

Harriet was also the ultimate homemaker and teacher. She taught me to make homemade pasta sauce, coffee and stuffed cabbage; how to sew, knit, needlepoint, do crewel work, iron and fold fitted sheets; how to eat a lobster, love veal sweetbreads and escargot and garden from seed to table.

My sweetest memories of her will be with me forever: Harriet rocking baby Zachary to sleep on the porch swing in Vermont as the wind whistled through the screens and sunlight dappled the floor - only to have Ed or Terry wake him with their zany antics, and Harriet calming him again with her infinite patience and love; her beloved Christmas trees; her love of all things Yankee; and her devoted support of animals, children, education and the underserved.

She was the mother of my beloved husband - a boy she raised to be a man of integrity, grace and unfailing kindness. Harriet was a second mother to me. She was a woman of extraordinary generosity, honesty, kindness and honor.

A few weeks ago, I brought her the stuffed cabbages she adored and the blueberry pie Ed preferred. When I asked her if she enjoyed them, she replied, "Yes, the stuffed cabbage was delicious. Not satisfied with that answer, I asked, somewhat timidly, "What about the blueberry pie?" She replied, quickly, "It was fine. But Julie, don't forget to roll the dough out thin."

Okay, Harriet, I will remember. I will remember.

Harriet’s three stepsons, Fred, Steven and Edwin, and their spouses (Dianne Sears, Sybil Schlesinger, and Judy Goodwin-Rosenberg, respectively) and children (Carol and Lisa; Sam and Selene; Daniel and Michael) are grateful to Harriet for the friendship, love, support, compassion and joy she brought to her husband, Edwin A. Rosenberg, for more than half a century of marriage.

Dear Ed and family,
It was a bit of a shock to read of Harriet's passing. She did have a wonderful life, especially her last 50 or so years. I have some great memories of Harriet, as a college classmate, Bethelite, and friend. I am grateful to have known her for so many years. And as we so often feel, wish we had spent more time together. Please accept my condolences and know my thoughts are with you all.
