Benjamin A. Speglevin

Benjamin S. Speglevin, age 84 of Danbury, died peacefully in his sleep, Saturday, September 24, 2016 due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Benjamin was born October 29, 1931 in Danbury, CT to the late Bronislaw and Irene (Szymanski) Speglevin. He attended Danbury Schools, was a 1950 graduate of Danbury High School and was a graduate from Danbury State Teachers College with an Associate’s Degree in Electronics in 1952.

Entering the United States Army, Ben became an M.P. and served in Korea. Upon his discharge, he began selling vacuum cleaners, opening the Vacuum Mart on Liberty Street. Later he moved his business to Keeler Street, it’s current operating location. Ben sold and repaired vacuums and later sold and installed central vacuum systems in homes and businesses.

Ben was a husband, father, grandfather and friend who enjoyed skiing, swimming, salesmanship, golf, skating and even traveled to Europe several times to ski. He was with the first group of Americans invited to the former Soviet Union to ski Mount Elbers in the Caucus Mountains in Georgia.

Ben married Ella E. Hooper in 1957. They had six children: Benjamin S. Speglevin, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Brookfield, Merry C. LaRoche and her husband Kevin, Joseph N. Speglevin and his wife Debra, Jill E. Austin and her partner Nicole all of Danbury, and Chantal E. Detlefs and her husband James of South Salem, NY. He also leaves nine grandchildren: Christopher, James, Justin, Nicole, Kyle, Melissa, Taylor, Eric and Benjamin. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.

In addition to his parents, Ben was predeceased by his brother: Joseph and his wife Rosmund, his daughter: Barbara “Bunny” Gradasso and her husband Robert.

In keeping with his wishes, there are no calling hours and burial is private.
