Hilda (Carlson) Downing

On Saturday, May 30, 2020, Hilda Downing — mother, grandmother and great grandmother — passed away just a few weeks shy of her 88th birthday. 

Hilda was born on June 23, 1932 in Larchmont, NY to John Carlson and Margaret “Rita” Carlson. She married Francis Downing in April 1960 and together they raised four children - one son, Michael, and three daughters, Patricia, Eileen and Karen.

Hilda had an active social life and many passions, including singing in the church choir at St. Mary Parish in Bethel, CT. She also enjoyed sewing and was a highly skilled seamstress. She was also an avid quilter and loved to teach others her craft. She was sought after by friends, family and her community for her hand sewn home goods and handbags. Hilda liked to travel and had the opportunity to visit many places, including Norway, Egypt, England, Ireland and South Korea.

Hilda was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Francis. She is survived by her four children: Michael and his wife Catherine, Patricia, Eileen and Karen; her three grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Kristina, Kaitlyn and Lindsey; and two great grandchildren, Penelope and Jackson. 

A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Hull Funeral Home in Danbury, CT. Donations may be made to Ann’s Place (www.annsplace.org), a nonprofit that helps those living with cancer and their loved ones.
