Carol Ann Barney

Carol Ann (Makszin) Barney of Bethel, CT passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Fairfield, CT in 1938 to Elizabeth Makszin and was raised in Newtown, CT. She was a proud alumnus of Newtown High School and Becker Junior College. In September of 1958, she met Alan Barney at a college open house. They fell in love and were married in August of 1959 and have been happy together for over 62 years. In 1968, they moved from Darien to Bethel where they raised eight children. Carol was a devout Catholic and active member of St Mary’s Parish and of many other community organizations, including the Bethel Senior Center. She acted and tap-danced in many community musicals. She was a loving wife and mother, a gifted artist and homemaker, and an avid puzzler, gardener, decorator, and conversationalist. 

Carol was predeceased by her son, Mark Edward, and her sister, Betty Wajdowicz. In addition to her loving husband Alan, Carol is survived by her brother Ron Makszin of Norwalk; six daughters, Kathleen Ciuci, Lisa Barney, Melanie Brooks, Kimberly Attridge, Christine Haas, and Michelle Barney-Saucier; and by one son, Peter. She will also be dearly missed by her 19 grandchildren, her many nieces and nephews, and her dear friends throughout the Bethel community. 

Friends and family may say farewell at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 13. Her funeral will be held at St Mary’s Church, Bethel on Friday, May 14, at 10:30AM followed by a graveside service at St Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.
