Joan C. (Donohue) Armstrong, 91, of Danvers, MA, died on July 13, 2017 of natural causes in her home at Putnam Farm Senior Living.

Joan was born in Queens, New York on July 29, 1925, to Ernest and Catherine (Sullivan) Donohue.  She and her husband, James, raised their son Keith, and daughter Kathryn, in Huntington, Long Island where she was an avid bowler and enjoyed family time each summer at her parents’ beach home in Asharoken, NY. The couple moved to Danbury, CT in 1983 to live near their daughter, Kathryn and family.  Joan and James were married for 53 years until his passing in 2004.  Joan moved to Danvers, MA in 2014, where she was able to spend the past three years close by her children and grandchildren.

 

Joan lived a long, full life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  In her younger years, Joan enjoyed singing, acting, and painting. She graduated from Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, NY and later attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in NYC. She worked as an executive assistant at the prominent advertising agency BBD&O in NYC, where her father was an executive.  She also was the executive assistant for the Commandant at Eastern Military Academy in Huntington, NY. While living on Long Island, she was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society. In her later years, Joan and James vacationed frequently throughout New England, she enjoyed singing along to Frank Sinatra songs while running errands or just joyriding, she was an accomplished coupon queen who loved to shop, and she gave generously to charity.

 

Joan is survived by her son: Keith Armstrong and daughter-in law Debra of Stratham, NH; her daughter: Kathryn (Armstrong) Renzulli of Salem, MA; her grandchildren: Cheryl Armstrong, Michael Renzulli, Katherine Armstrong, and Mandy (Renzulli) LoConte and her husband Frank LoConte; and her great-granddaughter: Josephine LoConte.

 

The family will receive friends at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave. Bethel, CT on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Bethel, Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel, CT.
