John Carroll Brown

John “Jack” Brown, of New Preston, CT passed away peacefully at home on Thursday,
September 13th, surrounded by his loving family, after a fierce, but short, battle with cancer.
Jack was born on 11/9/1940 in New York City to Leroy Taylor Brown and Madeline Carroll
Brown and grew up in Mexico, Governeur NY and Venezuela. He was an athlete, playing
basketball on a state team in Venezuela, as well as football and basketball at The Gunnery. After
graduating in 1959, he attended Colgate University where he was a two sport athlete on both the
basketball and track teams, graduating in 1963.
After college, Jack enlisted in the Army where he served in Ft. Benning GA and Seoul, South
Korea. He re-entered the army in 1972, completed Officer Candidate School and went on to be
an Intelligence Officer assigned to the 10th Special Forces group in Ft. Devens, MA. After
completing his time in the service, Jack and his family moved to Burlington, VT where he
worked in the insurance industry. His life journey brought him back to CT, settling in New
Preston, where he and his wife raised their children while working in the automotive industry. In
his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with his friends, traveling with his wife and family and
cheering his grandchildren on at their athletic events.
Jack is survived by his wife and partner, Barbara, his loving children Stephen (wife Ali) and
Jennifer (husband John) and his 3 grandchildren; Maddie, Taylor and Morgan. In addition, his
older brother, Leroy and his 2 sister-in-laws, Nancy and Sarah, as well as 5 nieces and a nephew;
Terry, Pam, Sean, Ashley, Virginia and Casey.
A memorial service celebrating his life is planned for September 29th at the First Congregational
Church in Washington, CT at 11:00 am.
