Theodor Jones Obituary

Theodor Jones was born in Chicago, IL to Northrope & Catharine (Oxholm) Jones on 10/14/1926. The family moved to Wayne, PA where Ted attended elementary schooling at Episcopal Academy and then Radnor High School. World War II broke out while Ted was attending and he left school and joined the Navy, serving in the Philippines area as a signalman on the Alhena, a supply ship. He proudly served from August 1944 until May 1946.

The following September, Ted entered Mercersburg Academy, Mercersberg, PA and on to Franklin Marshall, Lancaster, PA where he enjoyed wrestling. Ted also took courses at the Wharton Business School and the Harvard Business School in Cambridge, MA.

He followed his father’s footsteps, deciding to start a career in the metals industry. His first job was with Edgecomb Steel in Philadelphia as an indoor salesperson. In the early 70’s Ted joined Nonferrous Int’l in New York, then to IBC Corp where he became Vice President of Marketing & Sales. In the 80’s he went with Dynamet Corp of Washington, PA where he opened up the New England area for orthopedic appliances as well as titanium rod, wire & bar stock. His final move in business, which turned out to be the best and most enjoyable, was to Algonquin Industries in Guilford, CT where he concentrated on the sales of copper based alloys.

In the later years of Ted’s long and illustrious career with steel, aluminum, brass and copper, he decided to go into business for himself, Jones Metals Co. He enjoyed his work traveling extensively throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.

As busy as Ted was, he took time out for enjoyment. Grandfather Theodor Oxholm started his interest in sailing by sending him to Chesapeake Sailing School. After progressing from small boats, Ted loved the 34 ft Vineyard Vixen of which he and his wife, June sailed to Maine & Nova Scotia. He always wanted to sail along the eastern coast of the US, so an opportunity came along whereby he was able to purchase a 45 ft ketch, so Ted and wife, June sailed her up the Intercoastal Waterway, a most memorable trip.

Ted enjoyed his association with long distance sailors, taking over the Joshua Slocum Society from Commodore Don Holms. Ted organized the Centennial Celebration of Joshua Slocum’s single-handed navigation around the world (1896-1898) with no engine, in Newport, RI.

Ted was predeceased by his first wife, Jill Sherndal Jones, the mother of all Ted’s children, and his sister, Catherine Jones Rice. He leaves his present wife, June Jones of Bethel, CT and sister, Susan Jones Hewton of Kennett Square, PA.

He also leaves four children, Winifred Jones of Barton, VT, Jill Agnew of Sabattus, ME, Theodor Jones of Essex Junction, VT and Thomas Jones of Dixfield, ME as well as 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and many very fond nieces and nephews.

Ted has been a faithful member of St. Patrick Church in Redding, CT and enjoyed many years singing in St. Mary’s Church in Bethel as well as St. Patrick Church.
