Welcome to the memorial page for

Joan (Haviland) Pearl

February 24, 1926 ~ May 7, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Joan Haviland Edholm Pearl, 90, of Redding, CT died peacefully in her sleep, May 7th 2016 at Geer Village, Canaan, Connecticut.

Born and raised in Arlington, New Jersey, daughter of Reginald and Dorothy Haviland. Joan attended Kearny High School and later graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with an Associate’s Degree. She met her first husband Charles John Edholm while working for a department store in NYC designing windows. They moved to Redding and built their home on Sherman Turnpike in 1949, where they raised three boys, Roger, Geoffrey and Kenneth. Joan continued to further her education, receiving a teaching degree from Western Connecticut College and later earned a Master’s Degree from Fairfield University. She was employed by the Berry Elementary School in Bethel for 25 years where she enjoyed teaching 2nd and 3d grade.

She lost her first husband in 1967 and remarried to Calvin Pearl in 1975. Cal and Joan continued to live in Redding and traveled throughout the US and Europe visiting historic points of interest. Joan’s first love was always her boys, but history played a big role in her travels. She read about each trip extensively.

Joan was predeceased by her son Geoffrey who died in 1989.

In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by her children, Roger of East Dorset, Vermont, Kenneth of Sharon, Connecticut and his spouse, as well as three grandchildren, Ethan, Jessie, Abigail and one great grandchild, Deringer Lily.

Her thoughtful personality and sweet smile will be missed by us all.
