Welcome to the memorial page for

Albert C. Stewart

November 25, 1919 ~ October 13, 2016 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Albert C. Stewart, 96, died Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Benchmark Senior Living at Ridgefield Crossings, in Ridgefield.  He was the husband of the late Colleen Stewart.

Al was born on November 25, 1919, in Detroit, MI.  He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1942.  He served as an Ensign, then Lieutenant Junior Grade, in the US Navy during World War II, where he was stationed in the South Pacific.  He returned to Chicago for a master’s degree, then moved to St. Louis, MO, where he earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Saint Louis University in 1951.

Al’s achievements were numerous.  He worked on the Atomic Energy Commission’s hydrogen bomb project at Oak Ridge, TN.  He was a consultant for the Ford Foundation, the US Department of State, the US Department of Commerce, and the Atomic Energy Commission.  He was a board member of more than three dozen major organizations, and he was a top executive at Union Carbide.  Following his retirement from Union Carbide, he taught and served as Dean of the Ancell School of Business at Western Connecticut State University.  He was a tireless advocate of education for young people.  And he was a good friend.

Al’s greatest source of pride wasn’t in his many notable career successes; rather, it was his marriage of 55 years to his bride, Colleen.  She was the love of his life.
